THUNDER IN THE SKY

1914: two brothers are sailing as mates on barges back and forth to France from England, and their whole world is the war. Sam is a hot-headed patriot who watches Gil in bewilderment: why doesn't he enlist, why must he see Agnes all the time, why do people say she's no good? (Naive for fifteen?) When Sam discovers that Gil has become a spy to supply the two-timing Agnes with baubles, he takes a nightmarish trip to the front to see his oldest brother Manny, finds him almost unconscious from a ""cushy one"" in the stomach. Gil redeems himself by blowing up with his ship, Sam uses his posthumously arrived enlistment papers to sign up himself. The wise old skipper who knows that Germans aren't all inhuman and a weak-chested second mate complete the roster. Mrs. Peyton's characterizations are quick and assured (though mostly deja vu), the action, emotional and physical, is tense and suspenseful, but the overkill undercuts belief.
