As a mother calls her son in for a snack, bath, and bed, they speak to each other of the chicks in a song they both know, and the mother hen who feeds them and shelters them from rain, cold, and dark. By the time the song is done, the boy is asleep, and the mother carries him to bed; Foster deftly weaves together her story and the song, until the ""chick"" of the last scene is the sleeping child. Brightly colored line and watercolor scenes capture the action from a variety of perspectives; the musical accompaniment for the song appears on the back of the book.
