Sometimes hilarious, always entertaining autobiography of double nationality, as a Danish writer tells of the problems involved in his marrying the Chinese girl he loves, of years of separation, the birth of their baby -- the background of the war. His father was a dentist in Shanghai, where he got newspaper work for the China Press, after a short course in journalism in America. In Hankow he sees his first large scale suffering -- he virtually walks from Canton to Hong Kong to deliver pictures -- then is sent on to Chung-king. Finally his marriage to Chi-yun and departure for copenhagen, where the City of Flint incident added excitement. Then Denmark's fall -- the race to French Indo-China and China -- and Pearl Harbor precipitating their escape again from Shanghai through Free china. He covered the Flying Tigers, but an incident between his small daughter and the Generalissimo's son made him persona non grata. So out of China, via the Rump, and on to America...Frank -- with popular, and unpopular, prejudices, this is a disarmingly appreciative recording of mishaps, misadventures and mixed marriage.
