Omnipresent but not always accounted for, the ebullient anonymous raconteur sometimes participates and constantly commentates, belting out her stories with the aplomb of a torch-singer who steals the show even if her voice breaks a little. ""The Legend of Carrie Marie"" immortalizes a senior who made herself over without waiting until college and had to be rescued in a grand charade by the boy-next-door when she got to ""the point of peril"" with a campus wolf. Then, switching to ""a cousin of mine,"" a once upon the time Gil Evans almost broke his engagement--but canny little-miss-sounding board drew out the nostalgic memory of how he'd proposed to Christine by telegram (I LOVE YOU STOP PLEASE MARRY ME). After that it's the regular crowd: bottle-blonde Milli who pulls coups everywhere, but has this endearing experience bridging ""The Inter-Generation Communication Gap""; Elsa and Jake who diet together in search of new horizons and find. . . each other; Tim, a serious projection, who's in a tight bind, and Nancy who helps him out after learning a thing or two from a kid sister. Finally, on befriending an underdog, the Yours Truly herself falls in puppy-love--which she richly deserves, being not slick but a quick, sunny, tongue-in-cheeky balladeer/parodist/analyst/therapist/humorist/all-around dynamo with a super sense of directions.
