In moods ranging from lyrical to (more often) bleak, one of the most graceful sf stylists offers us a watch that resets time, a pulp fiction writer who becomes aware that he is being invented by a pulp fiction writer, a contented family man who gradually turns into a rapist-by-telepathy, a few glimpses of future logistical-moral-social breakdown. Sometimes the ideas wear a little thin, but there are a couple of simply and fiercely realized premises, like ""The Village,"" in which the decimation of a Vietnamese hamlet is superimposed on a small-town American summer day. No galaxy-hopping or mechanical gimcracks here--just ""what-if"" hypotheses intelligently pursued.
