WHERE LATE THE SWEET BIRDS SANG

The current swing away from space hardware has made genetic engineering one of the most heavily mined sf veins. Here a big Virginia clan manages to survive global disaster with an improvised cloning technology beset through successive generations by drastic handicaps. Mark, the rebellious product of a rare unsupervised mating, reaches manhood just as the increasingly dose, dependent, passive clone-groups are succumbing to hopeless emotional and intellectual regression. Despite some overly noble thoughts about creative individuality, Wilhelm brings her usual levelheaded charm to the Shenandoah setting and the ingeniously restated generational predicament.
