I WANTED TO BE AN ACTRESS

The first lady of the theatre tells her story with the warmth, graciousness and candor associated with her. She traces early years of struggle, bit parts, stock, her marriage to Guthrie McClintic and finally success, with tremendous acclaim, with The Barretts, with Romeo and Juliet, with Candida, etc. Great names of stage and screen, people she has known -- kindly ancedotes, but no capitalizing on them. An exceedingly simple book, with none of the livewire theatre gossip that some of her contemporaries have indulged in. Last part a chronological appendix of plays and reviews. The illustrations add greatly to the attraction of the book.
