THE DRAGON REVENANT

This is the fourth of a fantasy series that began with Daggerspell (1986), all set in Deverry, Kerr's pseudo-Celtic kingdom. While touted as a stand-alone book, it follows directly from events of the previous volumes, with many continuing characters. The story begins with the funeral of Rhys Maelwaedd, heir apparent to the throne of Eldidd; his death and the disappearance of his younger brother Rhodry have left a dangerous power vacuum in Deverry. But Rhodry (who has lost his memory) is now in far-off Bardek, sold into slavery. It's all part of a plot by the Dark Council, who have taken Rhodry as bait to lure the sorcerer Nevyn into a trap. Meanwhile, Rhodry's wife, Jill, and her half-elvish companion, Salamander, go to Bardek in disguise to search for the missing heir. After various complications, most of them predictable, the Dark Council's designs are thwarted, and Rhodry is returned home. The resolution here is more satisfactory than that of the previous installment (The Bristling Wood), but there are still enough loose ends to set up another sequel. Kerr's fans will probably eat this one up, but the murky prose (full of jawbreaking Celtic words) and the by-the-numbers plot of The Dragon Revenant are unlikely to win her many new admirers.
