SMARTY

Smarty was the runt of the new batch of colts Martin Miller had bought; in fact, Sydney Mapes had just thrown him in for good measure. Nevertheless Mr. Mapes' son Stormy and Mr. Miller's daughter Jenny each have their respective horse-flesh-knowing eyes on Smarty. Jenny gets to have the colt, which she promptly names Taffy. Stormy has already had his turn at training Smarty/Taffy, though, and the animal has a way of dumping Jenny and running back to the boy. Of course, the two are at odds, but respectfully so, and they manage to get together on beating off a bear and hating a snooty, English-saddle neighbor. Jenny and Stormy are terribly earnest and never do anything frivolous. It's all deadpan serious, and the judgment of who should own Smarty is weighty indeed.
