THE HUNGRY FOX AND THE FOXY DUCK

Leverich's little folk-like tale about a duck who outsmarts a fox is neatly told, but (especially as packaged here) it is no competition for any of many real folk tales. As the fox tries to lure her out of her pond for a meal, the duck sends him off for a table, then plates and cups, and finally a tablecloth--which just happens to be red. ""'Hold up the tablecloth, Fox,' called the wise little duck. 'I do not think it is big enough'""--and so ""Fox learned why the field had a fence around it"" and readers see him high-tailing it away from a charging bull. The pictures are routine Galdone, though as usual he leaves no doubt about the fox's intentions and increasing desperation; and the book's dime-store look makes it easy to pass up.
