A new novel synchronizes two stories- and two worlds- and opens in Foxcrossing- the ""next step""- not all the way to heaven - but a happy, communal society whose members may be choice return to the earth they have left behind them. There Gil, a recent arrival, prepares to marry Cherry who makes the decision to go back after the discovery of his former attachment to her mother. As Shirley Plummer from a Bronx slum, Cherry becomes a nurse, is seduced and abandoned by a doctor- as an unwed mother, until another man offers her protection and ultimately a love she can return..... Although the first part never really connects with the second, this lack of togetherness will probably not be missed by her audience which also seems to have more than one life.
