BIKKA ROAD

The Hoppe family -- with its swarm of children (16 and another on the way) -- is far from an object of pity, for Horace is a father who keeps his home happy and Belle is adored by him -- and by her children. But trouble comes with young Edie's beauty, with the buying of a horse, then a car, and with the older boys' vengeance when they pay back the man with whom they have associated Edie's vanishing. The worst comes when Belle dies after the birth of a baby and Horace is faced with his failure and the knowledge that he will be unable to keep the family together and is even unsuccessful in his inept attempts at suicide. A short, tragi-comic novel in which love is not enough when stupidity is triumphant, this cuts fast and quick.
