THE PSYCHOLOGY TODAY OMNIBOOK OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Rolfing, graphology, TM, Assertiveness Training, Reality Therapy--the philosophies and proponents of the human potential movement are summarized in this encyclopedic compilation. Organized alphabetically, the entries vary in length from a few paragraphs to several pages, with the essential information distilled from key writings and presented uncritically. Thus, the three pages on est describe Erhard's ""catalytic experience"" and seminars but omit any mention of the secrecy surrounding them or the seamier rumors emanating from them. Major and minor gurus--Ouspensky, Freud, Cayce, Goffman, Reich, Meher Baba--also appear, and each listing is followed by at least one reference. Some of the subjects are ill-suited for this kind of arrangement, and inequities occur: parenting and existentialism warrant approximately the same space as biorhythms, face reading, and the Stillman Diet. Adequate as a reference but nothing more.
