The publishers' fondest hope of the season, this is still a descrescendo for Kay Boyle, lacking the literary quality of her earlier writing, the suspense story values of Avalanche, etc. Again a climate of recklessness and danger, the exhilaration of high altitudes, but this time it's Colorado in 1944 and a ski troop outfit- many of whom are alien born. Centered here is Fennington, an Englishman, homeless, womanless, who falls in love with Connie, the Hollywood actress wife of Pater, too old for the division. Coming there to help a German prisoner of war escape, Connie's betrayal brings her death also- and Fennington is always left with a sense of guilt towards Pater. In the months that follow, of inaction for the troops, there is also a dispersal of narrative action, and at the close the outfit ships out- and Fennington leaves with the memory of another woman to replace Connie.... Not one of her surer sellers, but there will be firm publisher promotion.
