Filling his Uncle's request for a photograph of the elusive sandhill crane is at first just a way to kill time for New Jersey boy Link Keller who is faced with a lonely summer on Michigan's upper peninsula in the company of his partially crippled Aunt Harriet. But the woods that once seemed empty prove to be the home of fascinating wildlife and a few knowledgeable backwoods characters like the Chippewa ""Charley"" Horse (and, surprisingly, Aunt Harriet herself) and the perfect place for Link to discover his own inner resources. Link's friendship with the forest develops in a series of neatly programmed episodes but these are held together by a mood of soothing steadiness and by Robertson's sure knowledge of just the kind of discoveries a novice naturalist is likely to make.
