The vicissitudes of (yet) another life with father- recently widowed- has a new perspective, for the author tells of the things that happened when he and his bride decided to accept his father's offer (for six months only) of moving into the big house near St. Louis with him and his brother Ted, a medical school student. Getting adjusted to Father's habits, preferences and set ways of doing things was just the first step -- harder for Pat since the boys had some years' start. There were his ideas about family activities in which church, gardening and moving furniture, had to be faced; his relations to golf and his neighbors, to his older sisters and to a maid who called on saints for help were something else; his birthday and spring cleaning, a flood, Halloween, Christmas, photography, a book club rounded out some explosive situations. A squire type at heart with calculated dictatorship his goal, Father had worthy adversaries -- as tricky as he -- in the three young adults under his roof and their combined strategies often make a laughable accounting.
