Dr. Cully drew on his experience as Professor of Christian Education at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary to edit a book long missing in his field. Less than two hundred years separate us from that first Sunday School of Robert Raikes, and we are too apt to think of Christian education's beginning there. How helpful it is to have this anthology which gathers together the great thoughts of the leaders in Christian education all through the centuries from Clement of Alexandria, who was born about 150 A.D. to Albert Coe, who died ten years ago. The concern of the educators took many forms, and so the combined effect of the book is to give the reader a historical perspective on an activity which has never been missing from the Church. This volume will reach a wide audience, -- students, clergymen, professors, teachers, directors of Christian education, and even laymen seeking no more than to enlarge their own knowledge of the Church. It is a big volume, covering a big subject in a unique way.
