An English ghost story in which family affinities and jealousies are mirrored in another generation. John, Jennifer and their parents move into an antique shop inherited from Great-aunt Clara and soon discover it's haunted. Jennifer, sensitive, intellectual and her father's idol, is disturbed by dreams of ghostly longings. Her twin, John, is so attuned to her that he shares the dreams; unlike Jen, he also sees and speaks with the ghost. Rosalind, an orphan who had cared for prickly old Clara, becomes John's close friend. As it becomes clear that the two ghosts are the shades of Clara and her talented sister, Alice, also the victim of an infatuated parent. Jen is allied with Alice and Rosalind with Clara in a mysterious feud; John is the unwilling mediator. John and Rosalind try to discover what tragedy has set the sisters, close in life, at odds in death. When John is hurt by a carelessly driven car seen in both past and present, Jen and Rosalind unite in concern for him; their harmony facilitates the ghosts' reconciliation. A carefully plotted tale with an intriguing array of love triangles: John-Jennifer-Rosalind, their past counterparts, the triangles including Jen's father and Alice's mother. The well-wrought love story, plausible rendering of sibling sympathy triumphing over parental favoritism, and mildly spooky happenings combine to make a satisfying entertainment.
