ZEPPELINS AGAINST LONDON

When Count von Zeppelin launched his first giant, lumbering airships around the turn of the century, he could only guess what powerful weapons they would soon become against proud England. The zeppelins were put into use against London soon after the war broke out in 1914, and for two years continued to harass, terrorize, and kill the civilian population of that great city. Nothing could stop them. Anti-aircraft guns were too small to reach the big ships hovering murderously above. Tiny fighters equipped only with rifles and fire darts did little to stop the zeppelin. But finally a defense system was created which made it possible for young pilots such as Lieutenant Robinson to get above the zepps and, using incendiary bullets, send them tumbling like fiery logs down out of the sky. That defense system was the beginning of organized air-raid defense as we know it today. So effective did it prove that zepps ceased being a formidable weapon of war. A colorful, extremely well-researched and presented story of one of war's forgotten episodes.
