Four plays in verse on classic Greek themes -- Phaedra, Iphigenia at Aulis, These are plays of blood and death, the weary concern with cause and effect, life and death, life in death. Written in part on two Guggenheim Fellowships, the plays represent the work of a disciplined technician. The verse is somber and cadenced, the action intense and compact. However, for the general reader, these plays of lust and violence have little of life in them -- dark, dim, difficult, they will have a limited appearl.
