A kind of novelized nonfiction story, this is the authentic account of the building of Fort Phil Kearney on the Powder River and of its subsequent destruction at the hands of the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. The Sioux, who were the main tribe concerned, were led by Red Cloud, generally considered the most crafty, military-minded Sioux that the white man ever faced. The most outstanding white character in the book is Portugee John Phillips, a scout and Indian fighter, but even he is more of a figure in the Spectacle than a leading character. Fort Kearney was built 250 miles deep into Sioux territory, in breach of the established treaty, and the Indians rightly resented the invasion. After Red Cloud destroyed a huge party of soldiers in an ambush he besieged the fort for the winter. Portugee John made a dashing ride through two hundred miles of blizzard territory to Fort Laramie to get relief troops. Though Red Cloud was temporarily defeated, he struck back and the Fort was lost.
