LAUGHTER IN THE WEST

There is something of Shella Kaye-Smith's Sussex Tales quality in this story of the inn keeper's daughter who could not make up her mind which of her suitors she wanted, and of the series of circumstances that took the decision out of her hands, and made her perpetual nurse to a man who had lost his health in a fight for preserving her honor. Through the story runs the thread of the country folk's superstitions, their perverted sense of humor, their crudities, their cruelty, their kindliness. Strong is better at his atmosphere than his plot.
