THE FIRST BOOK OF RHYTHMS

An informal statement of the rhythms as they are manifested in many aspects of life, done quite simply and flowingly-with Langston Hughes' skill as a teacher and an important poet. As he goes, he builds back and forth on his material, increasing the clarity of his concepts in a rhythmical way. He talks of the movement and rhythm in all things and begins with a simple illustration of a wavy line across a page. There is the beat of the heart and from it, drumming and the steps to countless musical variations. Sources of rhythm in nature are everywhere too, from a shell's spiral to spreading branches- just as they are in the machine world man has made for himself. A book that may take a special interest, but may also stimulate what is dormant.
