by Laura Stein ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 7, 1986
Billed as ""like no other diet in the world""--for once, there's something to the hucksterism. Stein's regimen starts out with a 10-day ""transitional phase,"" which requires three days of nothing but vegetables; after which whole grains, chicken, fish and fruits are added in specific quantifies on specific days. No oil-based dressings can make the vegetables more palatable (although low-fat yogurt, tofu and other dressings are allowed). Nor can butter enhance the mandatory breakfast baked potato (yes, breakfast). At the end of 10 days, so Stein promises, we will have lost five to 10 pounds and will also have ""cleansed"" our digestive systems and reduced our ""addictions"" to high-calorie foods. We now enter the ""stabilization phase,"" which involves a diet consisting of raw and/or cooked vegetables, whole grain foods, low-fat dairy products, plus fruits daily; in addition to which we have a choice of pasta with low-calorie sauce and/or small portions of fish or chicken. Finally we move into Stein's so-called ""personalization phrase,"" which allows an occasional glass of wine, pizza or a scoop of ice cream--but only in small quantities and never frequently enough to reactivate the old cravings. Needless to say, Stein includes exercise in her regimen. She prefers the aerobic variety: a hefty 45 minutes at least four times a week. In sum: just different enough to start a new diet craze and make this one a best seller in ah already crowded field.
