A FRIEND FOR TIGER

Two newcomers create a warm, honest look at a boy's empathy with a caged tiger. The boy, William (drawn as a rabbit), sees the ""ferocious"" tiger when his mother takes him to a circus. His fear turns to pity as the ringmaster forces the tiger through humiliating hoops; at the end of the act, William tosses his stuffed tiger, Max, into the cage to keep the real one company. Later, he misses Max and goes back to the circus to check on him, finding the two beasts curled up peacefully. Although Henno's illustrations are a trifle distancing, her imaginative use of atmospheric lighting lends a surreal aspect to the scenes of the big top and to William's late-night journey. This touching story shows how the road to maturity is truly achieved one small step at a time.
