UNDER THE PIRATE FLAG

The story deserves the insignia of the skull-and-crossbones. Like any good pirate story, the action is spirited, the adventure girded with danger, the crew led by blackguards. It's not entirely watertight: no one personality stands out as unforgettably evil; helpful, sheltering pirates turn up a little too regularly; and the hairbreath escapes are too frequently coincidence controlled. Nevertheless the suspense is there and unavoidable as Stephen Carruthers successfully camouflaged an entire cache of gold, then found that his only possible hiding place would be aboard the pirate ship. So he stowed away for the better part of the trip, but came out of hiding to lead a mutiny, and finally just barely survived going down with The Happy Return. It's a good rousing escape for the boys.
