by Lawrence Pringle ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 25, 1977
Like Gannon (What's Under a Rock, 1971), but more briefly and for younger children, Pringle offers a species-by-species catalog of the creatures--sowbugs, spiders, wood roaches, etc.--commonly found in the cool, damp ""microclimate"" under a rock, board, or indeed ""any object that covers the ground."" A second section on the crayfish, leeches, mayfly nymphs, and a few others you might find under rocks in streams is less cohesive--probably because, as Pringle remarks, ""almost any small, aquatic fresh-water animal can be found under a rock at some time."" Overall there is no larger view of the ""procession of life"" which the Schwartzes observed in their Life In a Log (1972) and which Pringle himself has chronicled in other contexts. But with a clear, closeup photo for each species and ample hints for finding and identifying it, this could be an inviting and supportive first field guide.
