by Lee Bennett--Comp. by Hopkins ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 20, 1970
Inflated. . . since few of the few (eighteen) 'poems' burst with energy, thrust, rhyme, or stayingpower; but suggestively illustrated in rusty froths and sensibly arranged to reveal or reflect or refract Me--no exclamation point--as where two Mirror verses echo one another on a double page. Me: in the looking glass, a shadow on the wall, alone in my tree; in the tub, most exuberant--A. B. Ross' ""An Indignant Male"" ("". . . Sometime they'll rub/ And rub and rub/ Until they simply/ Rub/ Me/ Out.""), Aileen Fisher's ""After a Bath"" ("". . . Just think how much/ less time I'd take/ if I were a dog/ and could shake, shake, shake.""). An undistinguished hymn to ""Hamsters""; ""Nobody Loves Me"" by Charlotte Zolotow; two happier hurting-poems (""Bump on My Knee"" and ""An Itch""); ""This Tooth"" (Mr. Hopkins' own); and Gwendolyn Brooks on burying an expired goldfish--""Our old garden tree/ Will protect him for me."" Buttered milquetoast.
