by Lee Bennett--Ed. Hopkins ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 1987
The noted anthologist has once again collected poems that combine quality with an unerring feel for the interests of his young readers. What child isn't fascinated by dinosaurs? Unfortunately, fewer poets are, so eight of these 18 poems had to be especially commissioned. Written by well-known poets such as Lilian Moore and Myra Cohn Livingston, these are mainly lighthearted laments for the giants of old. Some, such as Patricia Hubbell's ""When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth,' take advantage of the sensory effects of saying the deliciously complicated names of the dinosaurs, coming up with lines like ""Brontosaurus, diplodocus, gentle trachodon,/dabbled in the muds to time,/Once upon, upon."" Tinkelman's pointillist-like black-and-white, full-page pictures preserve the feeling of elegy for these majestic creatures, giving them a remote, almost dreamy perspective. This is delightful light verse, of medium to good quality, and of high interest to any child, It's a natural for introducing the rewards of poetry.
