a season that has brought Irene Hunt's Across Five Aprils (1964, p. 413, ), standard Civil War fiction with stock characters is bound to suffer by comparison. The hero is 15-year-old Dan who was eager to leave his apprenticeship at train operation and get into the War. When he joined the Confederate Morgan Raiders he had to earn his grey coat: cutting wires, burning bridges and even rescuing General Morgan himself. Dan's private vision of war is blasted by reality especially when Gulley, his best friend, is fatally wounded. At the War's end, Dan and his oldier-brother Cary start home and Dan realizes that all the tired, homeward bound seterans, both Union and Confederate, look alike. Dan, his boots too small and his too big, is very young for the heroic role assigned him. Boys may enjoy this for its active adventure, but it is not an exceptional book.
