Fifteen-year-old Bonnie Schuyler looks forward to a long summer in her home-town of Hamilton, New Jersey, with foreboding. As a last resort she volunteers as a Nurse's Aid and from that moment the boredom she anticipates magically evaporates. Drawn into the life of a hospital and nurtured by the unfamiliar possibility of helping others, Bonnie changes from a self-centered adolescent to a sympathetic and responsible one. Her first brush with adult romance, an unrequited crush on a young medical student, momentarily threatens her new-found compassion, but the positive effect of her summer counteracts her impulse to withdraw into self-pity, and she accepts her disappointment with the resiliency of a person who knows that there is more purpose in life than the gratification of a momentary whim. Lots of clinical detail and a sad, but not too sad love story should make this a very acceptable teen-age novel.
