A true incident of Texas and Galveston in 1986 is told with the stark simplicity that matches the drama of the story of 14 year old Jed McBride who won a cross country horse race on his mustang, and of his sister Tibby who kept the home fires burning. With his shipwrecked father lying sick with amnesia in Boston, Jed decides to enter the Texas to Vermont race- both as a means of seeing his father and to win the needed prize money. Put out at having to stay home, Tibby also runs her own race of growing up, sees her mother through the birth of twins and makes her own way to a better understanding of people. In its alternate telling, the story has impact and makes the best kind of pioneer reading.
