RYAN'S HAND

Barbara Cartland romance-nonsense on a contemporary-Texas ranch--but starting out in Boston, where librarian Cara Martin has a tender, non-sexual relationship with handsome lawyer Ryan Langton. . . who suddenly dies of Love Story-itis, leaving Cara his half-share in the family ranch. Furthermore, Cara has sworn to carry out Ryan's deathbed-wish: to live for a full year at the ranch--despite the naked, ugly hostility of Ryan's rancher-brother Jeth. . . who is convinced that Cars was ""Ryan's whore."" Cara takes up residence on the Texas ranch, then, suffering from greenhorn indignities and Jeth's loathing. Worse yet, to prove that Cara's a scarlet woman, Jeth (""the most awesome human being she had ever seen"") keeps arousing Cara's sensual side, filling her ""with a terrible and urgent craving."" And, especially since Jeth's engaged to marry somebody else, Cara keeps trying to keep the awesome hunk at a distance. Eventually, however, after the usual spats and caresses, Jeth realizes that Cara is a saint, and Cara gives in to her passion for Jeth--which is just what the dying Ryan had in mind. (""It was the only way he could set us up to fall in love."") Clumsy and charmless, but without the soft-core-porn sequences that most such paperback-style concoctions now feature.
