CHESS: First Steps; THE CHESS APPRENTICE
by ‧RELEASE DATE: June 15, 1961
In the first of these, those who know nothing about chess are introduced to the game via diagramed explanations of fundamental principles, the chessmen, basic moves, elementary chess strategy. To insure step by step comprehension, the reader is quizzed after each point and may check his answers with those provided at the end of the book. The illustrations are comic, the explanations unembellished, lending an air of ease to a complicated ancient discipline. Graduates of book 1 are invited into the pages of The Chess Apprentice where gradually they are lead full swing into the ensuing battles with their methods of attack and defense, of assault and control. Moves from actual games are used as the novice learns from the expert how to successfully plan patterns of movement. Both books are attractively turned out and are ideal for anyone motivated toward the game.
