by Leonard Bacon ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 23, 1939
Leonard Bacon's poetry is definitely literary and aimed at that group. This -- his autobiography -- is easier reading than his poetry, but also of the ""highbrow school"" -- it lacks the grace and facility of Logan Pearsall Smith and Edman. Serious in intent and save for occasional bits of dry wit, serious in execution. His experience cuts a wide swathe:- his scholarly background and training, a year in Switzerland, then America and 13 years of teaching at Southern California, with a goodly portion of anecdote of men he knew. The war -- his writing career -- his travels -- famous people he knew -- what he thought about and what he liked to do -- his fishing and the pursuit of the elusive muse. Not particularly personal, and though there is extensive commentary on the passing scene, it lacks warmth and vitality.
