A small story of a small boy is also a small message of faith for, on the Hampshire downs, the orphaned youngster is the helper of Rolfe, the shepherd, and the vastness of the world appalls him. He fears the barrows where the chieftains are by legend buried but he finds solace in the village and the Saxon church until Rolfe proves that the Nativity story is for ""simple people"" because the angel of the Lord came at night and in the winter to the shepherds and, that being lambing time, all the sheep would have been frightened. However when Rolfe dies reading the Gospel According to Saint Luke the boy knows that the angel of the Lord has come to Rolfe right before lambing time and his loneliness vanishes. The simplicity here assures a welcome.
