A bleak and very moving book, with terse, unsentimentalized, rawboned writing. But I can't see it as a book you can sell. It's a desolate ""little man, what now?"" theme, in the Dos Passos school of writing, a book epitomizing defeated young America, with little direction and less hope. The youth, Nick, returns from a year in Spain to his home town, joins the ranks of the Lithuanian quarter, falls in love with a Lithuanian girl, already engaged to one of her own people, and fearful of breaking it off. The brand of ""communist"", result of the year in Spain, makes it impossible for Nick to find work. Elena marries the other boy; Nick faces an empty future. Here is a writer to watch, a book designed for critical comment, but where can you sell it?
