This, as Lewis Gannett makes very clear in his introduction, is a book of poetry to be read- preferably to be read aloud, not to be studied but to be enjoyed. And there is no question that the some 300 poems selected for shared pleasure have an ageless as well as timeless appeal. There are love poems, poems of ecstasy and mystery, of childhood, of the sea, of war, of America- and other countries, with a closing section of lighter verse. The selections are for the most part not only familiar but established favorites which should ensure the longevity of a collection such as this for home libraries.
