A mild family story, successful of its kind, about farm boy Michael and his dog Mud who find a homeless young rabbit and keep it in a box under the apple tree because Michael's father, angry about the bike and baseball mitt Michael left outside, won't let him bring it into the house. But when Michael braves a thunder storm to go out and feed the rabbit in the night, he finds his father in pajamas by the fire giving the animal its bottle--and even conceding when he's done, ""That's too much weather for anyone. You'd better take her up to bed with you."" Joan Sandin's pleasant but unexceptional green and brown wash pictures are on a par with the text and in tune with Skorpen's tender-realistic tone.
