by Lilian Jackson Braun ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 20, 1990
The 11th appearance of multimillionaire newspaperman Qwilleran and his crime-stopper cats, Koko and Yum Yum, finds them forsaking Pickax City for Down Below and Junktown, where the gentrification process is endangering the existence of the century-old Casablanca, now home to assorted minority and low-income families. To help out SOCK--Save Our Casablanca Kommittee--Qwill and the cats move into the penthouse, where Koko quickly flicks up a rug, uncovers a bloodstain the size of a body; sniffs a wall and discovers a dying message from a (supposed) suicidal lover; and, believe it or not (and you will), spells out clues while playing Scrabble with the (as ever) slightly slower-witted Qwill. Meanwhile, the developers are moving in, there's a showing at the art gallery that used to be co-owned by the deceased penthouse resident, and Qwill recognizes hardly anybody at the Press Club. Before Qwill's millions can underwrite the Casablanca's restoration, there's a dreadful fire. But not to worry: Koko and Yum Yum are saved, as is Qwill. The guilty, of course, do not escape--not with Koko on the case. Another charming entry in ""The Cat Who. . ."" series.
