AWAY FROM HOME: Letters to My Family

In the dubious literary tradition of Billy's collected wit, Jimmy's campaign speeches, and that Carter family cookbook come Miz Lillian's letters from India during her Peace Corps stint. Leaving her Plains' door unlocked, she trained in Chicago, learning Marathi and worrying about being ""de-selected."" Assigned to a family planning center 30 miles from Bombay, she spent two years much like any other PCV: enjoying new friends, deploring the poverty and poor sanitation, missing American food (""l'd rather have a chunk of cheese than diamonds""), and enduring her roommate (""I have to pray all the time to keep from pushing Mabel out the window""). Occasionally deeper thoughts emerge--about segregation especially--but mostly this is undistinguished except for the name and a few salty comments. What's next--Amy on ""How I Spent My Summer Vacation""?
