ARTHUR'S PRIZE READER

The running argument engaged in here by chimp siblings Arthur and Violet has obvious easy-reader relevance: Violet, out to win the first-grade reading contest, insists that she can read, and Arthur says she can't handle hard words. Arthur too is in a contest, selling Super Chimp comics so he can win dinner for two with King Kong--he ridicules Violet when she picks up the ad and sounds out ""dinner for two at your fay-or-ite rest-au-rant."" Violet of course proves correct--but verification is artificially postponed till the end. There is no dinner for two anywhere as Arthur doesn't win, but there are ice-cream sodas for two at Violet's favorite ice-cream store--her prize for being the best first-grade reader. The plot is predictable and the prevailing competitiveness unfortunate, despite the made-to-order situation.
