by Lillian J. Bragdon ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 20, 1964
Mrs. Bragdon's survey of the Adams family provides an excellent introduction for younger readers to the name that recurs most often in American history. She follows the career of Samuel Adams in pre-Revolutionary days with that of John, who became the country's second President. Then, it's on to John Q., Charles Francis, Henry and Peter. The remarkableness of the Adams family has always been conceded. However, individually and collectively, members of the family have resisted the efforts of biographers at the adult level to make them relatively interesting. By concentrating on their continuing dedication to public service and their consecutive involvements with the political issues of their day, the author has achieved a biography that is also a parallel history of the U.S. The members of each succeeding generation are examined in brief with foibles present among the many virtues.
