No wonder that Dr. Einstein, in the foreword, sings his praises. In surprisingly few pages- 114- the author sketches the evolution of physical concepts, from the mechanical universe of Newton and Galileo, through the upheaval brought about by the Quantum Theory and the Special and General Principles of Relativity, right down to the quandary of indeterminism that faces physics today. This is no book for the beginner, but the reader who has enjoyed Hecht's Explaining the Atom and similar popularizations has sufficient groundwork for finding this rewarding reading.
