Another title in the ""Earth Watch"" series (see Bannon's Sand Dunes, above)--this one about how and why our planet lets off steam from fissures, vents, fumaroles, and geysers, and how we are attempting to harness the energy. The atomic furnace that gives earth its molten core occasionally provides spectacular volcanoes but more often just boils water that can be used to drive turbines. Sometimes the effects are spectacular, as with the nearly periodic eruptions of a geyser; sometimes the action is quieter but easier to harness. All are manifestations of an energy source humankind is just beginning to tap. A handsome book, with beautiful color photos and a lucid text. Despite the title. more space is given to geology than to energy, but this is still a good introduction. The usual confusion between water vapor--which is visible--and steam--which isn't--is perpetuated, though photographs of invisible things are invariably dull. Index, glossary.
