VICE AVENGED: A Moral Tale

Richardson revivified, in this dressmaker copy of a late 18th century throbber in which an aristocratic rapist is tamed to domesticity arid righteousness. On a card-room bet, the Marquis of Gore abducts and rapes a neighboring Duke's daughter, innocent Cressy. in no time the Duke is informed and a richly satisfying revenge follows, involving an informal house arrest and daily floggings. Gore is forced to marry Cressy and neglects her during her pregnancy. With a lettre de cachet, the Duke has Gore locked away in the Bastille. But the Revolution frees him, and after a season of healthy farm work, he returns chastised, begging the Duke's forgiveness to assume his responsibilities to his faithful wile and baby son. A neat, amusing reconstruction, or more precisely, in the words of the author: ""A fairy tale, frankly unserious, frankly unrealistic for a realistic, serious age.
