CHILDREN OF THE RESISTANCE

It all added up to torture and death."" For the ""nasty Nazis,"" that is, but not for our teenaged heroes, whose separate exploits in various parts of Occupied Europe are breathlessly recounted here. There's a trio of Danish boys who smuggled their Jewish friends out of danger, thus beating ""Hitler and his Jew-murdering clique."" There's German Renata, who found a brave answer to her timid father's question, ""But what positive action can you take against the Nazi juggernaut?"" There's Aldo and his patroness, the deceptively ""Fascist Contessa,"" who did their bit, even though ""We haven't enough explosives to blow up a pussy cat."" And Pierre, who rescued two Royal Airmen without saying anything silly at all. . . because he was a mute. The author bases her tales on actual research, but has changed the names to protect the innocents, who possibly were more hip than her imaginary dialogue implies, (""Oh look,"" exclaimed Olga, ""Look, a tank!""). Well, They Also Served, but intelligent readers are likely to gag on these Tom Swifty resisters.
