Annette Dancy, 15, a student at Monsieur George's ballet school, was the daughter of an impoverished Northumberland clergyman's widow. The little dancer was one of three candidates for the role of the Little Match Girl, a ballet adaptation, prepared for competition for the Cecetti Casket, a national award. As Annette wins the chance to dance the role she is offered in a film contract in Hollywood. But remembering the experiences of Jamie, who had appeared in an earlier minor ballet film, Cock o' the North. Annette turns down the contract, despite its financial promise. The reader feels a little dissatisfied with Annette's unresolved relationships to Jamie and Angus, a home-town suitor. There is a pleasant glow to the telling of the tale, a sense of knowing the little dancer and her devotion to her art.
