HA HA HA HYENAS

The laughing hyenas had grown very slim. Every time they were about to eat, something would make them laugh."" Thus their prospective dinner always gets away, and they have to eat oranges instead. When an elephant comes along they ply her with elephant jokes until she laughs herself to sleep, then cover her with ketchup, olive oil, pepper and cheese to make ""the biggest pizza in the world."" But their kinves sawing on her thick hide only tickle the elephant, and the pepper makes her sneeze so that the hyenas are sent flying. In the end the skinny hyenas, now bandaged, are again eating oranges, and still laughing. The messy, comic style pictures fill pages with laughing hyena mouths and HA HA HA's in the spaces between them, and show ketchup dripping from the elephant in globs that will drive readalong mothers up the wall. This escapes the blandness of so many beginning readers, but it's not what Lily Tomlin would call tasteful.
