A long wartime novel, the setting a small town away from the Front, in Brittany. Cross sectioning the people of the town, one gets a panoramic view of the fatal effect of the war on every type of citizen. It's a satiric, bitter picture, powerfully drawn. The plot is tenuous, hold together loosely by the sinister figure of a highly grotesque and neurotic character nicknamed ""Cripure"". There is brilliant writing -- uneven, perhaps -- vital characterization. Not a book for lighter moments. Sell to customers who liked Man's Fate.
